InternetBar believes that to grow the field of ODR, that two things must be true: first, there needs to be a marketplace for cases that are going to be resolved online; and second, there needs to be an adequate pool of trustworthy trained ODR neutrals. InternetBar is working independently to create a marketplace for cases to be resolved online. The purpose of this ODR Training and Certification project is to lay the foundation for the creation of an adequate pool of trustworthy trained ODR neutrals.
The obvious benefit of an ODR certification program are twofold. First, by having a certification program practitioners are held to some entry level knowledge, experience, or competency that provides for a universal level or program integrity. As practitioners may be located in any national law scheme without universal application, a certification program provides for some level of integrity for the delivery of services.
Secondly, the certification of an ODR practitioner to some level of professional capacity provides a level of assurance to the consumer or user of ODR services that the selected practitioner or program has a level of competence.
Again, I believe that ISO standards may be a very reliable method of dealing with the standardization and universal recognition of ODR standards.
